The Toyota Prius is a veritable icon in the automotive industry. It sparked a revolution in 1997 as the first mass-produced vehicle with a full-hybrid powertrain. In 2012, Toyota expanded the Prius line with the Prius Prime, a plug-in model with impressive fuel economy and range, advanced tech, and, importantly, electric-only driving capability. Ten years later, the Prius Prime remains an excellent pick for drivers seeking versatility, efficiency, and a way to experience EV ownership without a full commitment to battery power.

At the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, Toyota recently revealed the Prius Prime's most significant update yet. Scheduled to arrive at dealerships next summer, the 2023 Prius Prime represents a generational redesign with more curb appeal, bolstered performance, and increased EV range. We'll know more specifics when Toyota announces the official on-sale date and pricing in the first half of 2023. Here's a quick look at a few known highlights.

Sportier Styling and Performance to Match

The 2023 Prius Prime wears a bolder, more athletic aesthetic, with a lowered and widened stance, dynamic front and rear fascia styling, and a sleek "One-Motion" silhouette. Setting the hatchback in motion is a new fifth-generation hybrid powertrain paired with a 2.0-liter engine and a recently developed li-ion battery. The result of the upgrades is a nearly 100-hp increase to 220 horsepower and a more than 50% electric-only range increase (estimated ~39 miles per charge).

Advanced Connectivity and Safety Tech

The 2023 Prius Prime features an available 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia system with advanced cloud-connected navigation and OTA updates to ensure you always have access to the latest features. The system also features Intelligent Assistant, allowing you to find directions, enjoy your favorite media, and even adjust climate controls with intuitive "Hey, Toyota" voice commands.

The 2023 Prius Prime comes standard with TSS 3.0, the latest iteration of the company's innovative Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver aids. All models include:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist
  • Traffic Jam Assist
