Finally, after over a decade of waiting, Toyota is releasing the next generation 4Runner later this fall. The upcoming crossover will borrow elements from the Tacoma. These include its engine options, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a TNGA-F frame and suspension architecture. There's much more this SUV has to offer, so keep reading to learn more.
Highlights of the New 4Runner
The new Toyota 4Runner is heavily inspired by the Tacoma truck. But it doesn't just mimic some of the elements - several features are ripped straight from the Tacoma itself. For example, the exterior has been updated with a similar front end. While the interior has identical buttons, an instrument cluster, and a center stack. There's also a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen available and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Like the Tacoma, the 4Runner now has a TNGA-F frame and suspension, giving the SUV better off-road capabilities. Also, both Trailhunter trims are optimized for overland and rocky terrain. Meanwhile, the TRD Pro's trim is geared more toward desert treks.
If that wasn't enough, Toyota also took the Tacoma's base engine and gave it to the 4Runner. Now, the 4Runner will be powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter i-Force inline-four-cylinder. It, too, will produce 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. There's also a 2.4-liter i-Force Max 4Runner Hybrid with an electric that produces 278 hp. However, with the right setup, the hybrid can output 326 hp and 465 pound-feet of torque. Both engines will also come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
