The Toyota RAV4 is a quintessential compact crossover, offering spacious comfort, appealing features, and abundant versatility in a conveniently sized package. These attributes are magnified in the RAV4 Prime, a plug-in hybrid variant with potent performance, excellent efficiency, and more electric-only range than just about any PHEV in its class. It's a compelling option for Atlanta drivers who are interested in the EV lifestyle but don't want to depend 100% on battery power.
Energetic Yet Efficient
A compact crossover might not be the first vehicle type to come to mind when thinking about an automaker's second-quickest vehicle. But the RAV4 Prime manages to do just that. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder pairs with an electric motor to produce 302 horsepower—good for a zero-to-60 spring in ~5.5 seconds, better than all other Toyota models except the six-cylinder GR Supra.
Despite its zippy performance, the RAV4 Prime is admirably efficient, achieving an EPA-estimated 38 mpg using gasoline. Leveraging the 18.1-kWh battery capacity increases that number to 94 miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe). It also enables an estimated 42 miles of electric-only range, an impressively high figure for the segment.
While the RAV4 Prime requires external charging to optimize performance and efficiency, it can operate just fine on gas alone. However, keeping it topped up is easier than one might think, as you can replenish the battery overnight (~12 hours for a full charge) using a standard three-pin household-style wall outlet (120V). Hooking up to Level 2 (240V) equipment drops the time to ~4.5 hours.
